Help and advice for those people thinking about taking their motorcycle CBT, Direct Access, or Advanced Training Course.

Motorcycle Training South Wales

The face of Motorcycle Training in South Wales has certainly changed recently.  With the implementation of the new, split practical motorcycle test.

With just 2 Multi Purpose Test Centres serving South Wales it means greater pressure is being put on the testing system as motorcycle training schools from as far afield as Hereford and Mid Wales, converge on South Wales to take the new test.

Motorcycle Training Schools in South Wales have the choice of just 2 new test centres for the Part 1 test.  They are situated at Newport and Swansea.

Previously the motorcycle test could be taken at test centres at;

Cardiff

Bridgend

Merthyr Tydfil

Neath

Swansea

Newport

Abergavenny

Cwmbran

Monmouth

Llandrindodd Wells

So you can see how losing these numerous test centres has put pressure on the test booking and testing systems in the 2 South Wales sites.

We at 1st Class Rider Training-Cardiff are pleased to say that even with the added test booking demand we have been able to obtain tests for our students and we have the use of an excellent training area where we can simulate the new test centre layout.

We are more than satisfied that we have been able to meet the new demands for Motorcycle Training in South Wales, head on and we have been able to continue to enjoy a very high pass rate for the new 2 part motorcycle test.

So if you are looking for Motorcycle Training in South Wales please give us a call and we will be happy to advise you on the best course for you.

New Motorcycle Test

Well it is in and what a start.  I’m pleased to say that 1st Class Rider Training-Cardiff has had a success with our first student going forward for the New Part 1 of the 2 Part Test, passing with a fault free ride.

Others were not so fortunate and reports in the press showed four crashes and one broken arm on the first day of the new safety manoeuvres part of the test.

With no motorcycle test centre in Cardiff we have to travel to Swansea or Newport for the Part 1 of the test.  We then get a choice for the Part 2 (on road practical riding) and the choice is Swansea, Newport or Merthyr.  Yes, again, No Cardiff motorcycle tests.

What this means is that the demand for motorcycle tests has far out stripped the availability.

Tests which could have been taken in Cardiff, Abergavenny, Bridgend, Cwmbran and many other regional, ‘local’ test centres can now only be taken at the limited number the DSA have provided for us.

The DSA are proud of what they have achieved!  But now you try getting at test for students.  At Newport last week there were training schools from Monmouth and as far as Hereford with students for tests.  Newport is now their ‘local’ test centre.

So take away the misfortune of the crashing test candidates on day one, it is the ‘crashing’ of the testing and booking system, buckling under the strain of there not being enough test centres that will carry the lasting damage.

The industry is struggling, and the DSA think they have met their targets.

Riders of Cardiff Opens it’s Doors

Riders of Cardiff, the new BMW & Ducati Dealership opens it’s door officially this weekend at Sloper Road in the City. (Saturday the 9th & Sunday the 10th of May 2009).

Just along the road from Cardiff City’s new Stadium, you are assured a warm welcome from Dealer Principal, Kevin and his dedicated sales team.

The dealership will be launching two new bikes this weekend.  The new BMW F800 R and the Ducati Streetfighter.

Kevin has invited us at 1st Class Rider Training-Cardiff to ‘be a presence’ at the dealership and we certainly hope to continue the links with Kevin that we enjoyed when he was in charge at Aston Martin/Porsche and Ducati at North Road

Riders of Cardiff is a long awaited next chapter in BMW bikes sales in Cardiff.

NSPCC. Supporter Number 6026185

A big Thank You to all of you who donate so freely during our Monthly Ride Outs.  The last ride out raised £50 and I have received the following letter from the NSPCC. (Reproduced here in part)

”     On behalf of the NSPCC Cymru/Wales thank you for your kind and generous donation of £50 towards our work to end cruelty to children.  We are pleased to enclose receipt number 586354.

Your support is vital to ensure we can continue with our work in preventing cruelty to children.  We rely on the support of the general public for 87% of our funding. Without your support we would have to close our services within six months.

Here are just a few of the ways donations such as your own are used in Wales and The Borders;

National Child Protection Helpline – Annualy, approximately 147,000 calls were made to the Helpline. The service also provides support in Welsh and five Asian languages.

,~~,

CHILDLINE CYMRU/WALES – is a service provided by the NSPCC and is the free 24 hour national helpline for children and young people in distress or danger. It takes a lot of courage from a child in need to make the step to call CHILDLINE and sadly due to lack of funds only around half of these calls are answered. Children call CHILDLINE for support, advice and to voice their concerns.  Without CHILDLINE their voices may never be heard and these children would not get the help they are crying out for.

The children that we help can never thank you personally but here is a quotation from one child who has recently been supported;

‘Without the help of the NSPCC  I don’t know how I would have coped. My life is now stable, I can’t forget what happened, but I am able to live and grow. I can’t thank you enough’.

If you would like to know more about the work of the NSPCC either visit our website at www.nspcc.org.uk or give me a call on 0207 650898

Yours Sincerely

Thank you to all who have donated.

Air Bag Jacket

Air Bag Jackets.

A UK Surgeon has today called for Air Bag Jackets to be made Compulsory for Motorcyclists in the UK.

A demonstration was shown on the evening news, where a stuntman, wearing an Air Bag Jacket threw himself from his bike.  The jacket which is attached to the bike by a low resistance clasp, releases and deploys the air bag when the bike and the rider part company.

In the demonstration the rider then tumbled, apparently harmlessly, along the road as he was cushioned by the Air Bag inside the jacket as it immediately inflated prior to him hitting the ground.

Quite an impressive demonstration….but what happens if you forget to  unclip yourself when you nip into the shop or to re-fuel…… a bit embarrassing eh?

Anything that can reduce rider casualties needs to be given due respect and consideration but I feel it is early days yet to talk about making the wearing of such a device compulsory.

Your Bike & The MOT

MOT’s (Ministry of Transport) Test Certificates are needed on all motor vehicles once it reaches 3 years of age, and every year thereafter.

Everyone who uses a vehicle on road must keep it in a roadworthy condition.

The MOT looks at some of the more important items and components on your bike but you should be aware that an MOT certificate is a not a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of the bike.

Listed Below are the main components which would be inspected during the MOT test.

Lights

Steering/Suspension

Wheels & Tyres

Frame

Brakes

Fuel & Exhaust System leaks

Wheel Alignment

Sidecars (where fitted)

Body & Structure

Horn

Registration plates/vehicle identification/frame numbers.

An MOT certificates that at the time of the test, without dismantling, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law.  It does not mean the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate.

So in more detail what is inspected in each category.

Lights;

Condition, operation, security and correct colour of headlamps, read lights, indicators and reflectors.  Also the aim of the headlamp is checked.

Steering/Suspension;

Condition, security and operation, including forks, mountings, controls and bearings.

Wheels & Tyres;

Frame;

Free from cracks, damage, distortion or corrosion which is likely to affect the steering or the brakes.

Who Supervises the Scheme.

Even though we still call them MOT’s the Ministry of Transport, as such is no more and the Testing Scheme is now supervised by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency)  In other words….the Ministry of Transport!

Where can I get my bike MOT’d

There are around 1900 motorcycle approved test stations in the UK.  Look for the Blue 3 Triangles Symbol which they have to display at the entrance.

In Cardiff it is Fairwater Garage, at Norbury Road, Fairwater that checks and tests all the bikes used by 1st Class Rider Training.

Fairwater Garage is situated opposite Fairwater Police Station.  (If you don’t know where Fairwater Police Station is…….well, it’s opposite Fairwater Garage!)

What if I disagree with the result.

(I guess they mean a failure – I can’t imagine you disputing it if it passes)

There is an appeal procedure but the Testing Station itself is the first point of complaint.

If you are still unsatisfied then you can contact VOSA on 0870 60 60 440. You must complain within 14 working days and you may be offered a further re-test to re-check the original findings.

The full appeal procedure can be obtained from VOSA.

Look After it…..you expect it to look after you!

World of BMW Motorcycle Training

The next series of Blog News pages gives a summary of how 1st Class Rider Training-Cardiff came to be formed.

As a result of my close association with Peter Cramp, the Sales Manager at Rydale BMW Motorcycle Dealership, Cardiff I was able to become involved in the World of BMW Motorcycle Training School, based at Ystradgynlais.

Run by Kevin and Julia Saunders I was invited to join them and train BMW clients at all levels from CBT right through to their Advanced and Refresher Courses at the Swansea Valley site.

I am still licensed to train for them but concentrate my time now on 1st Class Rider Training in Cardiff.

As with the other organisations mentioned here and below, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with them, sharing ideas and helping them grow.

Harley Davidson Rider’s Edge

Just another chapter, in the 1st class Rider Training-Cardiff formation history.

When Harley Davidson was looking to set up a Europe branch of their Rider’s Edge Motorcycle Training scheme, I wasn’t far away.

The Director’s of the training school based in Builth Wells, Mid Wales needed Direct Access qualified Instructors and in the early stages of the development of Rider’s Edge I was able to assist in setting up an Advanced Motorcycle Training and Testing scheme. (Based on the RoSPA Gold Silver and Bronze grading system), and carrying out training at all levels from CBT right up to the Rider’s Edge Gold standard.

Working closely with Pat, the Motorcycling Director at the time I gained much useful experience and this was another stepping stone towards the formation of 1st Class Rider Training-Cardiff.

Cardiff Motorcycle School

What am I doing advertising Cardiff Motorcycle School, on the web site of 1st Class Rider Training.

Well I am often asked how I got started in Motorcycle Training and it was Stef & Simon at Cardiff Motorcycle School who got me into it.

I was still a serving traffic cop at the time and in the process of introducing Bikesfafe to South Wales. It was through this connection that Stef & Simon suggested I take up CBT training as well. They trained me and sent me to the DSA assessment centre at Cardington and the rest as they say………..

We still have a good working relationship, (and long may it continue) even though strictly speaking we are in direct competition. Any clients that I can’t accommodate (on 50cc ‘twist n go’ scoots for example) I recommend to stef and his team.

He in turn sends any inquiries for Advanced Motorcycle Training to us.

So I must say a big thank you to Stef, Simon and the team at Cardiff Motorcycle School for getting me started and helping me along the way.
