A Day Out With The Chuckle Brothers! It all started at 8 o’clock this morning when they turned up at Whitchurch for their Mod 1 tests booked in Gloucester. “Have you got your documents”. “No”! They’re at home in Barry Island! So a diversion to the island for all documents and then heading East for England. Taking a quick fuel and coffee stop in Newport. As we were about to leave, Chuckle 1 said, “I’ve lost the bike keys”! Eventually found, by a McDonald’s staff member, and off we go again. Mixed fortunes on the tests with one pass and one not so pass! Let’s stop for a cuppa on the way home…. As we leave the tea stop Chuckle 2 says, “I can’t find my bike keys”! Here we go again. Sometimes you have good days, and some days…. You’ve just got to Chuckle!

Aquaplaning – not Skidding. Beware today of Aquaplaning. Particularly if you go from just a wet road into a section of standing or surface water. Skidding is caused by a loss of friction in the tyres. Aquaplaning is where a wedge of water builds up just ahead of your tyre and contains too much water for your tyre tread to dissipate. This lifts the wheel enough to remove any contact you may have had with the road, and therefore gives you no steering or braking effectiveness. When approaching areas of surface water, slow down as you enter it. Give your tyres a chance, and relax. Don’t tense up. Take care.

Next Ride Out. Saturday 28th of April. The Bridge with no name!! Meeting at Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar at 9.30 for a 10am departure. The River Severn crossing has been in the news recently so we will be visiting the quirky village of Sudbrook. In the shadow of the new bridge, but is also the site of the construction for the Severn Tunnel Railway. The village remains dissected by the old railway line and is dominated by the imposing tunnel pumphouse buildings. We will then ride on to The Old Ferry Inn at Beachly, the site of the Severn Ferry crossing, used up until the construction of the Severn Bridge in 1966. Then a ride up alongside the river towards Gloucester for a stop at the White Hart Inn overlooking the waters. The picture shows the Bridge with no name in the background and the pumphouse to the left. The wall alongside the road hides the old railway and just beyond the trees is the estuary. Just a thought for any rail travellers who use the tunnel. On average 50million litres of water are pumped from the tunnel every day! So whilst the new name for the bridge is hitting the news, I think it should be called the “We’ll be home, now in a minute Bridge”. So join us for a ride out for a closer look at what we now take for granted.
